Yo–ZZISCO here! Thanks for stopping back by! Today I’m writing about a special G-Funk track that I did with the magnificent Juicy JC. Find out what it’s all about.
Era of the G-Funk
How many people out there know about the era of the G-funk? Maybe you’re unsure due to the name yet it’s probably music you’ve heard before from artists like: Snoop Dogg, Warren G, Nate Dogg, Dr. Dre, among others. As a kid, I grew up with siblings who were teenagers in the 90s, thus a lot of stuff we were bumpin’ was hip-hop and rap. This had a lasting effective on me as a human, so much so that here I am as a 30 year-old (damn I feel old) wanting to recreate that style of hip-hop that took over the west coast in the 90s (i.e., G-funk).
What Is G-Funk?
So what does G-funk even mean? If you’re familiar with the band, Parliament-Funkadelic they made a type of funk that was a bit different, they labeled it “P-Funk,” which stands for Parliament-funk and/or psychedelic funk. Parliament was big back in the 70s and in fact it was bands like this that helped influence and inspire the rappers in the 90s to create a new style of rap and hip-hop for gangsters. Thus, the g in G-Funk stands for gangster–it’s gangster funk.
Inspiration behind this G-Funk Track?
I’m infatuated with the G-Funk sound and the instrumentation used in these hip-hop tracks. I personally like making club music but thought to take a risk and make something different. I was super surprised with how the instrumental came out that I knew I had to put some vocals on it. Of course, it’s common for a male rapper to rap on a beat like this, especially American. I’m not trying to be like everyone else, so I thought it could be cool to feature my bestie, Juicy JC and have her do some lyrics in Mandarin.
The inspiration behind the lyrics stem from having contact with an individual who is very sensitive and undoubtedly prideful.
What Does The Story Mean?
The story she is telling is about a little king who has a little kingdom and obviously compared to other kings and kingdoms, his is quite small and pathetic. In other words, this little king is very delusional and self-centered. I’m sure we can all think of someone we know that falls into this category.
However, we made this song somewhat as a dis track for someone in particular that shares those exact qualities as the little king. To the uninformed ear, it could just sound like a typical West Coast beat that’s talking about marijuana. I chose to talk about this in English as a way for the song to have different dimensions. On one hand, it’s just a West Coast type beat that’s talking about arguably typical stuff you would likely hear on that type of beat (e.g.,weed) and on the other, we’re actually telling a story about a little sad king who is very prideful. Don’t be the little king.
More From ZZISCO
I’m feeling super blessed to mention the Music Gods are sending some positive vibes my way! I was fortunate enough to have a release with Thiccfreqness, which was a compilation that featured other artists like Hotfire, Fantom Freq, Frivolous Jackson, among others. The cool thing about this Halloween track is that I sampled one of my all-time favorite theme songs, Goosebumps.
Not to mention, I was also part of a compilation released by Wonky Wrecords, which is a label owned by El Monk. This is the first compilation released by this label–very happy to be a part of this community!
I also have some EPs scheduled on the way! I’ll be dropping a 2-track EP with Artichokes Are Yellow on 11/17/22, and one with Tall Door Records dropping after that. I have potentially 3 other EPs on the way as well, I cannot mention just yet though tee-hee.
